Together with 'Bald is also a haircut', the Fika House presents a two-part podcast 'Fika Encircles', about living with and after illness and about the shaky balance between being sick and healthy. Journalists Meike de Roest (podcast 'Bald is also a haircut') and Bart van Eldert ('Getting better is not for wimps' - Prometheus, 2018) discuss their experience with cancer and chronic illness.
While Bart van Eldert dwells in a "slower time," Meike de Roest carries an Ikea package of diabetes materials with her every day. They talk about their daily reality with illness, but they also reflect on the impact of being sick on the meaning of life. Is it still possible to have faith in your body when you become severely ill at a young age? Do they still dream of being able to participate fully in society again?
In the framework of the node festival 'Compassionate Bruges', the podcast 'Fika Encircles' will be presented on Friday, September 23 at 18.30h at the opening of the new FIKA house in the Bossuytlaan 24a in Bruges. During the opening of this new location, Bart van Eldert and Meike de Roest will discuss life and professor Reginald De Schepper (Lifestyle as medicine) and Steven Vanderstichelen (coordinator Compassionate communities - VUB) will place being sick and being healthy in another perspective than the purely medical. The cooperation with vzw 't Veldzicht gives the Fika House a warm place in Assebroek. Hilde Dieussaert (general coordinator vzw 't Veldzicht) explains the cooperation with the FIKA-house and its importance for the neighborhood.
