Compassionate Schools are places that recognise serious illness, caregiving, death, loss and grief as inherent aspects of life in schools. They pay attention to such experiences through a variety of activities aimed at changing attitudes and increasing knowledge and skills of both children and staff, so they are better equipped to support themselves and each other during times of hardship.
Together with Dr. Sally Paul from the University of Strathclyde, the Compassionate Communities Centre of Expertise leads a European Learning Network on Compassionate Schools. The learning network meets digitally several times per year and may meet more often to develop ad hoc activities such as seminars or tools to support schools when confronted with end-of-life situations.
